A $7 LED Case Can Now Turn Your Phone Into a Hidden Camera Detector

Researchers at KAIST, working with the National University of Singapore and Singapore Management University, published a hidden-camera detector this week that's genuinely clever: a smartphone, a low-cost LED attachment that costs under $7 to build, and an on-device AI model that can spot a concealed camera lens in under five seconds — even if the camera is switched off.

How it actually works

The existing way to find a hidden camera is to shine a light at suspicious objects — a smoke detector, a phone charger, a clock radio — and look for a bright reflective dot with your own eyes. The problem is that glass, polished metal, and glossy plastic all throw back bright reflections too, so people second-guess themselves over an ordinary screw or a shiny charger.

The team's system, called SweepLED, keeps the phone's camera fixed and instead moves the direction of an attached LED light across an object, capturing how the reflection changes as the light angle shifts. An ordinary glossy surface's reflection moves or fades in a fairly simple way. A camera lens's reflection deforms differently, because of the internal lens, aperture, and sensor sitting behind it. A deep learning model trained on those reflection patterns tells the two apart — and because it's reading the physical structure of a lens rather than looking for an active signal, it works on cameras that aren't currently recording. Across 30 tested objects, the team reported about 94% detection accuracy.

Worth being clear about the limits

This is a peer-reviewed research prototype, not a shipping product — there's no app you can download today, and the researchers haven't announced a commercial release. It also checks one object at a time rather than sweeping an entire room automatically, and a clean scan doesn't guarantee a space is camera-free; concealment methods the test set didn't cover could still slip through. Still, the underlying idea — cheap hardware plus an on-device model doing something a human eye reliably gets wrong — is a good example of AI being used to hand ordinary people a capability that used to require specialized equipment.

The bigger picture: cameras are everywhere now

Research like this exists because hidden cameras in rentals, hotel rooms, and changing areas have become common enough that "how do I check" is now a genuine, recurring question people search for.
