Even Apple Is Betting on On-Device AI Now

We spend a lot of time explaining why processing things on-device matters, usually to people who've never had a reason to think about it. At WWDC 2026 this June, Apple spent a keynote making the same argument to the entire world — not as a niche feature, but as its main competitive pitch against Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft.
The pitch: privacy as the differentiator
Apple's software chief Craig Federighi opened the AI portion of the keynote by stating plainly that privacy in AI isn't optional. That's a notable framing choice — most of Apple's AI competitors lead with capability first and address privacy as a footnote. Apple built its entire announcement around the reverse order: here's what's private, and here's what it can do as a result.
The rebuilt Siri AI, and the broader Apple Intelligence system behind it, splits work between two places: on the device itself when possible, and Apple's "Private Cloud Compute" servers when a task needs more processing power than an iPhone or Mac can provide. Apple's claim for the cloud half is that data sent there is processed for that request only and never retained — a stronger promise than most cloud AI providers make, but still a cloud dependency, not the on-device guarantee Apple markets it alongside.
The part worth being precise about
It's worth being clear-eyed here, since Apple's own announcement blurs it a little: the new Siri AI runs on a foundation model built in partnership with Google, using Gemini technology under the hood. Apple's on-device/Private Cloud Compute split determines where processing happens, not whether Google's models are involved in it. "On-device where possible" and "your data never reaches another company" are related ideas, but they're not the same claim, and Apple's marketing leans on the ambiguity between them.
Why this matters beyond one company's keynote
Whatever the fine print, the framing itself is the interesting part. The largest consumer technology company in the world just told its entire audience that sending less of your data to a remote server is a feature worth buying hardware for. That's the exact argument behind every app we build — we just don't have Apple's marketing budget to make it at a keynote.
It's also a useful reminder for anyone evaluating a "privacy-focused" AI product, ours included: the question worth asking isn't just "does this company say it cares about privacy," it's "what specifically runs on my device, and what gets sent somewhere else, and to whom." Apple's answer this year is genuinely more on-device than in past years. Ours has been "nothing leaves your phone, full stop" from the start — different scale, same underlying bet.
