What Is AGI, and Did GPT-6 Astra Just Reach It?

On September 3, OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra — a full production launch, complete with a video and a system card. OpenAI president Greg Brockman closed the announcement with a simple line: "Welcome to the AGI era." That's a big claim, and it's worth actually unpacking what it means before deciding how much weight to put on it.

So what is AGI, actually?

AGI stands for artificial general intelligence — the idea of an AI system that can perform any intellectual task a human can, across essentially any domain, rather than being good at a narrow set of things. OpenAI's own working definition, used in its charter, describes it as an automated system that can perform all economically valuable work as well as or better than humans. That's a genuinely different bar than "a really good chatbot" or "a model that's great at coding." A calculator is superhuman at arithmetic; nobody calls a calculator AGI, because it can't do anything else. The "general" part is the entire point.

It's also worth knowing that "AGI" doesn't have one universally agreed technical definition or test. Different labs, researchers, and philosophers draw the line in different places, which is exactly why a company can plausibly claim to be entering "the AGI era" without there being a single, objective benchmark everyone accepts as the finish line.

What OpenAI is actually claiming

GPT-6 Astra was trained on what OpenAI describes as its largest training run to date, using over 100,000 GPUs, and is notable for being the first OpenAI model where other AI models played a significant supervisory role during training. The company is positioning it as a major step up in coding, scientific reasoning, and complex multi-step work, and reported a 98.6% score on a benchmark called ARC-AGI-3, which is specifically designed to test general reasoning rather than memorized knowledge.

Notably, even OpenAI's own framing stops short of declaring AGI outright. Brockman's line was "welcome to the AGI era," not "we've built AGI" — a distinction that matters. It's also worth remembering that CEO Sam Altman said earlier this year that the term "AGI" isn't especially useful, at a time when competitors were the ones making big claims. The framing shifts depending on who's ahead at the moment, which is a useful thing to notice regardless of which lab is talking.

The pushback

Not everyone is convinced the term fits. Toby Walsh, an AI researcher at the University of New South Wales, described today's AI capability as "jagged" — genuinely excellent at some tasks while still failing at things a person would find simple. That unevenness is a real technical characteristic of current large language models: a system can ace a graduate-level exam question and then make a basic factual or logical error a child wouldn't. Whether that pattern is a temporary phase on the way to something more consistently general, or a more fundamental limit of how these models work, is exactly the kind of question researchers still disagree on.

Where that leaves us

The honest answer is: nobody outside the handful of labs building these systems can independently verify a claim like "we've entered the AGI era," and even insiders don't fully agree on what the claim would take to prove. What's true regardless of the label is that GPT-6 Astra is a real, more capable model shipping to real users this week, with genuine jumps in coding and reasoning benchmarks — and that "AGI" has become as much a marketing and strategic framing device as a technical milestone.
