Apple's First Foldable Just Shipped With a Lot More On-Device AI Muscle

After roughly a decade of patents, prototypes, and false-start rumors, Apple used yesterday's "Surprise and Shine" event to unveil its first foldable iPhone. It's called the iPhone Duo — not "Fold," not "Ultra," despite years of leakers insisting on one or the other.
The headline specs
Book-style hinge, a 7.6-inch nano-texture inner display, a roughly 5.4-inch cover screen, Touch ID built into the side button instead of Face ID, dual 48MP rear cameras, two front-facing cameras, and a dual-battery system split across both halves of the phone. iOS 27 adapts around the hinge with Split View multitasking, hands-free FaceTime, and a StandBy mode that doesn't require charging. Pre-orders start October 16, with the phone shipping October 23 — about six weeks after the iPhone 18 Pro models, which launch alongside the announcement.
The part worth paying attention to
The hinge is what gets the headlines, but the A20 Pro chip inside — built on a 2nm process — is the detail that actually matters beyond this one device. Smaller process nodes mean more transistors in the same space, and for the last several generations, a meaningful share of that extra headroom has gone toward the Neural Engine: the part of the chip that runs on-device machine learning without sending anything to a server.
That's directly relevant to the case Apple made at WWDC back in June, which we wrote about at the time — that on-device processing is the company's main differentiator against cloud-first AI competitors. A pitch like that is only as credible as the silicon backing it up. Every generation of chip with a meaningfully larger Neural Engine is Apple actually paying down that promise in hardware, not just in keynote slides.
Why a foldable is a reasonable place to test that
A larger unfolded screen means more room for on-screen AI features to actually be useful — live transcription with more visible context, on-device translation overlaid on a bigger canvas, image editing tools with room to show their work. None of that requires the phone to be foldable specifically, but a halo device is a predictable place for Apple to put its newest chip first, ahead of it trickling down to the rest of the lineup next year.
